Early detection

Screening is the area where more is not automatically better. A test can find something that would never have caused harm, and the follow-up carries its own risk. Deciding what to screen for, and when, depends on the person rather than on what is available to order.

What the evidence supports, and what it does not

This section is being written by our clinicians, and it will say plainly where the science is solid, where it is contested, and where we are deliberately cautious. We would rather leave it blank than fill it with something nobody has checked.

What happens here

The approach is the same in every area: establish where you are, change something on a cadence, then measure again to find out whether it worked. In early detection that work is organised into the programmes below.
